Mantradao governance

· updated

MANTRA DAO, renamed MANTRA in 2022, used OM as a governance token. Community proposals later shaped MANTRA Chain’s native staking coin, inflation policy and legacy-token migration deadline. In practice, understanding a decision requires separating the participants who voted, the proposal that passed and the rule that was implemented.

Token-holder ballots and mainnet governance

In February 2024, a community proposal approved using OM as MANTRA Chain’s native staking coin. The decision connected the existing token with the new blockchain, which launched on October 10, 2024 with OM in that role.

A later revision to tokenomics, covering longer vesting and lower inflation, went through separate votes by ERC-20 OM holders and mainnet validator nodes. For proposed inflation changes, MANTRA stakers can comment and vote before a new rate is implemented, according to MANTRA’s inflation schedule.

Older decisions use the ticker OM. The native coin’s ticker changed to MANTRA in March 2026, so a historical reference to OM must retain its original token, network and date context.

Inflation changes separate approval from implementation

MANTRA’s Inflation and Vesting Schedule records an 8% network inflation rate introduced with Proposal 2 on October 28, 2024. Proposal 5 reduced it to 3% on January 1, 2025. Proposal 17 subsequently approved an increase back to 8%, which Proposal 18 implemented on August 27, 2025.

Under the bootstrapping allocation described in that schedule, 60% of inflation was allocated to staking rewards and 40% to community rewards managed by the MANTRA Chain Association for liquidity incentives, public goods and application support. The allocation is itself subject to governance. A network inflation percentage alone does not specify an individual delegator’s staking return.

The 2024 and 2025 rates describe dated policy changes. MANTRA’s Weekly Transparency Report, Issue #14 , published on August 28, 2026, reported a 16.0% inflation regime for August 10 to August 16, 2026. That later observation has its own period; the earlier 8% implementation should not be treated as a permanent rate.

A governance decision could close a migration window

Proposal 17, passed on August 22, 2025, also governed the retirement of legacy Ethereum OMv2. In its August 25, 2025 deprecation notice, MANTRA specified January 15, 2026 as the migration cutoff. The notice stated that unmigrated ERC-20 OM would be considered forfeit and that the corresponding mainnet OM allocation would be reclaimed from the Mirror Bucket by the MANTRA Chain Association, with possible uses including community initiatives or burning.

The affected allocation was the mainnet equivalent reserved for those legacy tokens. The notice did not announce that every remaining Ethereum token had already been burned. MANTRA’s MANTRA Token Background documentation subsequently reported that Ethereum ERC-20 OM was deprecated and the migration window ended on January 15, 2026.

The vote set the migration policy. Conversion of an individual legacy balance remained a separate action during the migration window; approval of the policy did not automatically migrate holders’ tokens.

What a passed upgrade ballot establishes

Issue #14 also records Proposal 34, concerning the expedited v8.3.0 mainnet upgrade, as passed on July 17, 2026 after voting on July 16 and July 17. It reports 51.76% turnout against a 33.40% quorum threshold for that ballot.

Turnout describes participation, while quorum sets the participation threshold that the ballot had to meet. These figures belong to that proposal. Its reported passed status establishes approval; confirmation that the software upgrade activated is a separate question. The inflation history provides a documented instance of that distinction, with Proposal 17 approving a change and Proposal 18 implementing it.

Checklist for applying a governance decision

  • For a historical OM ballot, identify whether its participants were Ethereum ERC-20 holders or mainnet validators before applying its participation rules.
  • For an inflation figure, match the rate to its implementation date and the period being assessed; the 2025 implementation and August 2026 report describe different periods.
  • For a legacy OMv2 migration decision, retain the January 15, 2026 cutoff. An archived migration guide describes a route whose window has ended.
  • For a software upgrade, distinguish the ballot’s passed status from confirmation that the target version activated.
